Cinematik Internationl Film Festival Piestany is one of the major film events in Slovakia.
Founded in 2006, Cinematik reached over 20 000 viewers attendances over the years. Focusing on European cinema, it screens more than 70 features and
a lot of shorts every September.
“Cinematik tries to discover new talents in European and world cinema, but also highlights masters of cinema that are virtually unknown in Slovakia. Our audience had opportunity to see retrospectives of Nicolas Winding Refn or Alain Resnais; filmmakers such as Peter Strickland, Ben Wheatley, Jaime Rosales, György Pálfi, Veiko Õunpuu,Ventura Pons,or Luis Miñarro visited the festival in person.”
Most of the films screened at Cinematik are of European origin. Best European films of the year are selected in the main competitive section Meeting Point Europe. The films are chosen by 15 films critics from 15 European countries.
I was volunteer at first, but because of the course I am studying, I got offer to be a part of organisation team as an intern. My first year in 2015, I came few days before actual festival started and left few days after it was finished. We tried to prepare every screening places and made sure that director and special guests had everything since the moment they arrived. During festival days, people had to manage a lot if things at the same time and managed to decide on their feet. It gave me a lot of new skills and knowledge how festivals work. Although I was asked to help with 2016 as well, because of my studies in London, I could not attend last year which I am very upset about. However, being an intern was incredible experience and I am glad I had opportunity to be in the middle of organising the most important film festival in Slovakia.
